Union Minister for Electronics and IT Ashwini Vaishnaw said Generative AI (Gen AI) is a comparatively new phenomenon that requires the right balance between innovation and regulation to safeguard social structures, ensuring progress. He was speaking at an industry event on Wednesday.
He stressed although the new AI advancements are making lives easier with its transformative powers, this technology requires safeguards to avoid the possible threats, that are mostly likely to affect traditional structural patterns. He, thus, recommended that a new set of regulations and legislations are required to introduce.
Vaishnaw highlighted the darker side of the technology is affecting society, democracy and numerous societal structures that that were meticulously built over decades and centuries.
He urged several institutions created for societal protection to take proactive measures to maintain harmonious societal living in the face of digital threats or disturbances.
The minister emphasised while AI is not a new phenomenon and has existed for over three decades for industrial use, Gen AI is a new normal and users should handle it with utmost responsibility.
We need to reach an agreement on how society should move forward to strike a good balance between innovation and regulation, he added.
Vaishnaw suggested a consultative process for a final policy that would make every stakeholder's perspective heard, understood and analysed.
This is not the first time the minister has raised concerns about the AI invention. He consistently emphasises the substantial potential of the technology while also highlighting the associated risks.
