On Monday, India created history by securing its first ever medal in Lawn Bowls at the Commonwealth Games. The Indian team consisting of Lovely Choubey, Pinki, Nayanmoni Saikia and Rupa Rani Tirkey defeated New Zealand 16-13 in the semi-final. India recorded its maiden medal by reaching the finals in the women's fours event in lawn bowls.
Lawn Bowling is an outdoor game that consists of a ball, called a 'bowl' which is rolled towards a smaller and stationary ball, called the 'jack'. The objective of the game is to roll your bowls in a way that leads them to rest nearer to the jack than those of the opponent. This is achieved at times by knocking aside an opponent's bowl or the jack.
Lawn Bowls is an unheard game in India, but when Nayanmoni was injured while weightlifting, she discovered this game in 2007 when the National Games were held in Assam.
The team is all set to compete against South Africa, tomorrow.
