The Indian Sugar & Bio-Energy Manufacturers Association (ISMA) has presented a transformative plan to the government aimed at converting sugar mills into bio-refineries to boost the production of sustainable aviation fuel and other green energy sources. This initiative was discussed in a recent meeting between ISMA representatives and Food Minister Pralhad Joshi.
ISMA's proposal extends beyond the current production of ethanol, bioelectricity, and biogas. Deepak Ballani, ISMA’s Director General, emphasised that this move would aid India in meeting the international aviation blending targets set to take effect in 2027 under the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) mandates. This aligns with India’s broader goals of achieving net-zero emissions and enhancing self-reliance in energy production.
The initiative also seeks to create new market opportunities for India’s estimated 55 million sugarcane farmers, building on the success of the current ethanol blending programme which has significantly increased farmer incomes.
Last year, the government launched 400 E-100 fuel pumps to promote the use of E-100 fuel. Minister Joshi underscored the importance of further promoting E-100 use, particularly given India's leadership in the Global Biofuels Alliance.
ISMA has committed to collaborating closely with the government to ensure the swift implementation of the bio-refinery plan. This initiative is expected to set new industry benchmarks and enhance India’s energy security.
