Camera maker Nikon is a big name when it comes to photography and it made some unexpected announcements at CES 2016 (Consumer Electronics Show). The company announced two new DSLRs as well as a 360-degree action camera that can record in 4K which apparently is aimed to give the GoPro some tough competition.
The Nikon KeyMission 360 is a boxed shaped camera with two large lenses on either sides that can shoot in 360-degree videos. This is the first of its kind product from Nikon as the company has always kept away from such products in the past. The camera is also one of the few that can record 360-degree videos in 4K resolution. Being an action camera it is waterproof to up to 100 feet and also comes with Nikon’s Vibration Reduction technology to keep images steady.
The company announced two DSLRs as well including their flagship, the D5. Successor to the D4s, the new D5 uses a full-frame 20.8MP CMOS sensor with the new Expeed 5 image processor. It can shoot stills at 12 frames per second (going up to 14fps with the mirror locked) and 4K videos at 30fps. It also comes with 153 autofocus points and one of the first DSLRs with a dedicated AF processor.
At the back there is a 3.2-inch, LCD touchscreen as well as a 100%-coverage viewfinder and illuminating keys. The jaw-dropping feature though is the capability of the camera to shoot in the dark with a standard ISO range of 102400 which can be boosted to an insane 3280000.
The D500 was also announced with is Nikon’s new DX-format or APS-C sensor equipped DSLR which finally is comes as an update to the popular D300s. With a 20.9MP resolution, the camera can shoot 4K video 30fps, includes the new Expeed 5 image processor and 153 autofocus points, just like the D5. The camera also features Nikon’s new SnapBridge image sharing technology which uses an always-on Bluetooth Low Energy connection to communicate with other devices like a smartphone and share photos easily. The D5 will be available in March for $6,500 (approximately Rs. 4,40,000) for the body. The D500 will also be available this March at a price of $1,999.95 (approximately Rs. 1,34,000) for just the body with kit-lens option of a 16-80mm f/2.8-4E ED VR lens going at $ 3,069.95 (approximately Rs. 2,00,000).
