Semiconductor manufacturer Continental Device India (CDIL) will be India’s first company producing Silicon Carbide devices used in electric vehicles (EV) and power electronics in the country.
The company’s manufacturing plan came following MeitY’s commercial invitation to technology players that emphasised on the tech and operational expertise to modernise the SCL facility.
MeitY said the plant, which has supplied chips for Centre’s strategic needs including the space exploration programmes and defense, might be transformed into either a Research and Development (R&D) site for chip making or an "at-scale" manufacturing.
The CDIL also has a new semiconductor packaging line at its Mohali plant, taking its annual manufacturing capacity to 600 million units.
Furthermore, the semiconductor firm has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) under which the company can utilise the semiconductor wafer fabrication facility for its new packaging unit.
Amitesh Kumar Sinha, Joint Secretary, MeitY expressed its happiness over CDIL lead in packaging of discrete semiconductor devices.
Sinha said CDIL should also consider setting up a discrete fab in the country by availing financial support under the Semicon India programme in the future. The Joint Secretary stressed as CDIL and SCL join hands for knowledge exchange, India can look forward to more indigenous chip manufacturing and packaging and expand worldwide.
