Thought Leadership for reflection: On 30th, March 2017, I got great insight on human nature at the Kangra Airport in Dharamshala. As I sat silently in a corner, I was bemused to observe people going into a euphoric frenzy when the 14th Dalai Lama entered the airport. People were in a stupor, falling over each other for SELFIES.
I also saw folks from the advertising agency with whom I had done a leadership session, paying obeisance and getting their selfies. The chairman of the agency shared with me “Jerry, this was humbling. Some even had an out of body occurrence. This is the energy of the man.”
I asked him, did you notice the other monk with DalaiLama? He said NO! I said “you all completely ignored him. He was right there with huge energy in his serenity. I, sitting here was observing everyone falling over Dalai Lama and this monk. Akash, this monk may be the 15th Dalai Lama. Then everyone will notice and start falling over him. But today he was absolutely neglected. Why?”
Akash was silent and by now some of his other team members had joined in. I continued “Akash, Dalai Lama whose name is Lhamo Dondrub, was also a MONK without HIS HOLINESS TITLE. Like, the monk who was neglected today, probably Lhamo was neglected when he accompanied the 13th Dalai Lama. I shared an insight with you in the workshop yesterday, when I explained the power of humility, reverence and other values. Today you all felt the exhilaration, not because of his energy, but because you were elated by his stature, title and hyped personality. Remember the POPE was also a simple priest, who went unnoticed in church. Today he is revered. Gandhi an ordinary citizen is today the father of the Indian nation”
I then explained to Akash that people even have so-called out of body experience with celebrities like Vijay Mallya, Salman Khan, Sunny Leone and self-proclaimed Gurus like, Radhe Ma or Asaram Bapu. Some even worship pictures of Sri Sri Sri, Sadh Gurus and other Godmen of their ilk, who have created larger than life personas with great media-hype and perception management. If they were truly enlightened and humble why would they need positions of power and beg respect from people with all hyped titles added to their names. Jesus never did that.
Ideas for Action: In today’s materialistic, superficial world, everyone gives more importance to a HYPED-UP reputation, rather than the true character of a person. We have also become superficial and are misled by propaganda and media-hype that builds larger than life personas. Today cheats and crooks are hyped and glorified, while real heroes are ignored.
In my personal-development book “moJOsh Inspirator”, I have explained that humility means giving same respect to one and all. So my last observation about the POWER OF HUMILITY and its practicality to Akash was “here is how it works, today’s monk is tomorrows Dalai Lama. In client meetings, I observe agency people always focus on the CEO and the senior leaders. Middle managers are mostly ignored. Well friends that person who you ignored today, is tomorrow’s senior leader and CEO.”
