Apple is reportedly working on a more affordable version of its Apple Vision headset, despite lower-than-expected sales of the original Apple Vision Pro. The Vision Pro, while technically advanced, has been criticised for its large size and high price. Nonetheless, Apple has already expanded the Vision Pro’s availability to several countries in Asia and Europe, and rumours now suggest that a smaller, more cost-effective version of the headset could be released next year.
In addition to the more affordable headset, Apple is also developing a second-generation Apple Vision Pro, though this updated model may not be available until 2026. The expected price of the less expensive Apple Vision headset is around $1,500, which still positions it as a premium product, but one that may appeal to a broader audience than its predecessor.
Apple is also reported to be exploring the development of smart glasses without integrated screens, similar to Meta's Ray-Ban Stories. Although this concept was first mentioned earlier this year, significant technical challenges mean that an Apple Glass product may not be seen for some time.
Beyond wearables, Apple is said to be working on a slimmed-down iPhone 17 model, possibly branded as the iPhone 17 Air. This model is expected to be ultra-slim and aimed at design-conscious consumers who do not require the advanced performance of the Pro models. The iPhone 17 Air would follow a similar strategy to Apple’s MacBook and iPad lines, where the 'Air' models focus on portability and design rather than high performance.
This approach recalls Apple’s brief experiment with the iPhone Mini, which was discontinued after disappointing sales. However, the iPhone 17 Air is expected to target a different market, focusing more on aesthetics and everyday usability than compactness alone. Apple appears intent on maintaining a clear distinction between its Air models and more powerful devices, with an Ultra model potentially on the horizon, though such a release is not expected until 2027.
In other developments, Apple is reportedly prioritising the development of a foldable device, likely to debut as an iPad before making its way to the iPhone lineup. This foldable iPad could introduce a new category of devices, an category Apple has been grossly late to enter.
The next major launch from Apple is expected to be the iPhone 16 series, anticipated in about a month. Following this, a revamped iPhone SE 4 is likely, featuring a design inspired by the iPhone 16 lineup, with upgraded cameras, faster processors, and the capability to run advanced AI features that might be too demanding for the standard iPhone 15 models.
