After Attack From Opposition, Govt To Publish Monthly Job Data
The Centre, which has come under scathing attack from the opposition over not being able to create appropriate job opportunities, is set to come up with its monthly report on the number of new jobs. The first report on employment generation is likely to come out by the month-end.
While the labour ministry typically has been coming out with job-related data, they are often dated. This monthly report on job generation will be based on almost real-time data available with the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) and National Pension System (NPS).
“Jobs or the lack of them have been a cause for concern and the government is now trying to come out with monthly data which will be prepared based on EPFO and NPS reading as all new employees joining the workforce will have start contributions,” a senior government official, who did not wish to be identified said.
Sources added that the data will then be compiled by the ministry of statistics and programme implementation.
Recently, a study by Ghosh and Ghosh (Pulak Ghosh of the Indian Institute of Management and Soumya Kanti Ghosh, chief economic adviser of the State Bank of India) estimated that 55 lakh jobs have been created in the formal sector in 2016-17.
Earlier, Rajiv Kumar, vice chairman of Niti Aayog told BW that with investments picking up, the quality of jobs will improve.
“Besides, we need a much bigger focus on exports and tourism. Also, I feel that more than skill development, we need to focus on apprenticeship. You need to have many more apprentices. It is also important to modernise agriculture and agro-processing industry to create a larger number of jobs on the interface of the two,” he said.
The opposition parties, however, underlined that the Narendra Modi government failed to provide jobs and that India has been witnessing a jobless growth.
