Aimed at providing universal banking services for every unbanked household in the country, a total of 52.81 crore Jan-Dhan accounts have been opened in the last 10 years since the inception of the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY), according to the information shared by the Union Minister of State (MoS) for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary in the Lok Sabha.
These bank accounts have a deposit balance of Rs 2,30,792 crore as on 19 July 2024.
In a written response, the MoS stated that out of the total accounts opened under the PMJDY, 29.37 crore accounts, equivalent to 55.6 per cent of total accounts, belong to women. Nearly 66.6 per cent of the accounts have been opened in rural and semi-urban areas, which translates to about 35.15 crore accounts.
According to the MoS, the scheme has been covering all unbanked adults in the country since 14 August 2018. The scheme has been based on the principles of funding the unfunded and banking the unbanked.
Apart from PMJDY, the government has also initiated various other schemes aimed at social security. Under the Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY), over 20.48 crore enrolments have been received. The scheme provides a life insurance cover of Rs 2 lakh in case of deaths.
In an effort to provide one-year accidental cover of Rs 2 lakh in cases of death or total disability and Rs 1 lakh in cases of partial disability on a permanent basis, the Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana has received total enrolment of 45.08 crore, the MoS stated.
To fulfil the objective of funding the unfunded, under the Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana (PMMY), the total loans amounting to Rs 29.93 lakh crore have been sanctioned till 12 July 2024, as per the official data. The scheme provides collateral-free loans upto Rs 10 lakh to micro and small businesses.
