The Union Ministry of Coal has reported a remarkable upswing in the coal sector's performance, achieving substantial growth in production, dispatch, and stock levels during December 2023. According to the ministry’s official statement, the coal production for the month reached an impressive 92.87 Million Tonne (MT), marking a significant increase of 10.75 per cent compared to the previous year's figures of 83.86 MT.
Coal India (CIL), a key player in the sector, contributed significantly to this surge, witnessing a growth rate of 8.27 per cent, with production reaching 71.86 MT in December 2023, as compared to 66.37 MT in December 2022.
The cumulative coal production for the fiscal year 2023-24, up to December 2023, recorded an impressive jump to 684.31 MT, reflecting a growth of 12.47 per cent from the corresponding period in the previous fiscal year (608.34 MT).
In addition to production, coal dispatch also demonstrated notable progress in December 2023, reaching 86.23 MT. This marked an 8.36% growth compared to the 79.58 MT recorded in December 2022.
CIL's dispatch during the same period stood at 66.10 MT, exhibiting a growth rate of 5.49 per cent from December 2022 (62.66 MT). The cumulative coal dispatch for the fiscal year 2023-24, up to December 2023, soared to 709.80 MT, reflecting a robust growth of 11.36 per cent from the corresponding period in the previous fiscal year (637.40 MT).
This unprecedented growth in the coal sector is attributed to the significant contributions of Coal Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs), which played a pivotal role in driving progress.
