Indian messaging app Hike had launched an interesting and very useful platform Hike Total, which lets its users to access services like news, messaging, recharge and much more without an internet connection. Wondering how it works?
Developed in-house, the proprietary technology, based on the USSD protocol does the heavy lifting of encrypting, compressing and transmitting data. It has effectively supercharged USSD to help bring an uninterrupted experience to the users even without an active data connection.
The new platform is backed by Hike’s in-house technology called UTP (Universal Transfer Protocol) which is based on USSD protocol. The USSD is something that is present in all GSM phones since a long time ago.
If you have ever used additional services of your telecom provider in the past without internet like Astrology, Cricket scores, News, Jokes and much more through the SIM Toolkit, then you know what USSD is.
Similarly on Hike Total, you will be able to access services like Hike Wallet, Hike Messenger, recharge numbers, and get news, check horoscopes without any internet connection.
What Hike has done is, they have embedded the UTP in the Android platform by adding some tweaks with which users will be able to use Hike Total.
Hike Total Is Available In Limited Devices
Though Hike Total runs on Android but it won’t be available for download through Google’s Play Store for every device. Hike Total is available in a few selected handsets of Intex and Karbonn only which comes with pre-loaded Hike Total services.
As of now, Hike Total is exclusive to Intex Aqua Lions N1, Intex Aqua Lion T1, Intex Aqua Lion T1 Lite, and Karbonn A40 Indian only.
Hike has also partnered with telecom providers like Airtel, Aircel, and BSNL to provide low cost data packs; Hike Total works only with SIM cards of these brands.
How To Access Low-cost Data?
Services like sending messages, news, cricket, horoscope, rail info, recharge and Hike wallet are accessible without the internet. But for sending pictures, videos or to make video calls and every other task which requires active internet connection, Hike pushes some data packs towards the user.
So, if you get an image or a video from your friend on Hike messenger, you will have to buy a data pack in order to get the internet access. Prompts of various data packs will appear starting from as low as Re 1 for 20MB data.
Also, the data packs offered by telecom companies on Hike Total are cheaper as compared to what you’ll get directly from them.
You will also get a reward of up to Rs 200 in Hike Wallet for buying data plans after completing the KYC procedure.
You can sign into Total with just your phone number. Also, you can add money to your Hike Wallet using UPI through USSD.
