WhatsApp has revealed that it banned more than 65 lakh (6,508,000) problematic accounts in India during the month of May. This action comes as part of the company's commitment to comply with the new IT Rules 2021 set by the Indian government.
Out of the total banned accounts, a significant number of 2,420,700 were proactively banned by WhatsApp. In April, WhatsApp had set a record by banning over 74 lakh bad accounts in India.
With over 500 million users in India, WhatsApp is taking several measures to ensure user safety and combat abuse on its platform. In May alone, the messaging service received 3,912 grievance reports, including "ban appeals," from Indian users. Of these reports, 297 were actioned, indicating that WhatsApp took remedial action based on the complaints. The term "actioned" refers to the implementation of appropriate measures, such as banning an account or restoring a previously banned account.
WhatsApp has released this user-safety report, providing detailed information on user complaints and the corresponding actions taken. The company's preventive actions further emphasize its commitment to maintaining a safe environment on its platform.
