Chinese smartphone company Vivo India has said that the recent layoffs in its manufacturing unit in Greater Noida are in line with the company's business decision.
Vivo India said, "We look at staffing the right size in various divisions to improve productivity. The layoff is in line with this business decision."
Media reports on Tuesday (25th July, 2017) said employees from Vivo India's Greater Noida unit were laid off without any prior notice.
Reacting to the media reports, Vivo said in a statement, "We have strictly adhered to the rules and regulations and the contract, and are taking all the right measures to ensure a peaceful transition keeping their best interests in consideration."
The layoff led to a brawl between the sacked employees and the company guards on Tuesday as the employees were asked to pack up their work and leave since there wasn’t any work left for them. The tussle between the guards and employees led to some property damage in the office as well.
Vivo is at the third spot in smart phone sales in India according to Q2 results with over 3.4 million units. Vivo has recently extended the title sponsorship contract with the lucrative Indian Premier League (IPL) cricket tournament by five more years for a massive Rs 2199 crores.
Besides the IPL, the smartphone company is investing in other sports ventures and has acquired the title sponsorship rights of the Pro-Kabaddi League for a period of five years for Rs 300 core.
