Following the turbulence incident on a Singapore Airlines flight, the Association of British Insurers (ABI) stated that travel insurance policies are likely to cover injuries sustained due to aircraft turbulence, although coverage may vary. One passenger reportedly died of a suspected heart attack, with 30 others injured as the flight made an emergency landing in Bangkok.
ABI emphasised that travel insurance primarily covers emergency medical treatments or repatriation costs. Most policies also include provisions for medical repatriation or alternative flights if passengers are deemed fit to travel.
A spokesperson for ABI advised travelers to review their policy details for coverage specifics, as policies can differ. Currently, twenty individuals from the affected flight are receiving intensive care treatment at Samitivej Hospital in Bangkok.
The incident occurred when the aircraft hit severe turbulence during breakfast service, prompting the pilots to request an emergency landing at Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport.
