Transforming Engineering Students Into Industry-Ready Professionals
The session made deliberations around the dynamics of the industry and what can be done to counter the challenges of the ever-changing engineering field. The panel discussed how engineering graduates in India are fast saturating. The panel was of the opinion that engineers in India are being produced in abundance but the faculty, resources, and infrastructure of these institutions are perhaps not competitive enough to make the students ready for the industry. The panel also discussed that how engineering graduates can be made employable.
The session was moderated by Brij Pahwa, Editorial Specialist, Businessworld who started the discussion by putting forth some statistics about the wide gap which exists between the number of graduates and the availability of jobs in the market. The panel witnessed people from academics such as Dr. Rajeev Dubey, Director- Career Services & Outreach, JK Lakshmipat University, Mr. O P Verma, Principal, G B pant College Of engineering, Mr. Nitin Puglia, Chairman, Renaissance group of institutions, Dr. RS Rai, Dy. Director and Head - Research, Planning & Statistical Services, Amity University, Mr. Navdeep Singh Ahluwalia, Head Network and Information, Dalmia Bharat Group, Dr. Sajan Mathew, Professor & Registrar (Examination & Evaluation), Alliance University.
During the discussion, Dr. Rajeev Dubey gave a mantra for ‘effective learning by doing, not learning by mugging’. He said that the kind of students who focus on getting degrees and not solving the problems are the major contributors of problems existing in the engineering field. Navdeep Singh Ahluwalia, however, believes that by doing more and more internships a student becomes employable. Carrying forward this point, Dr. Sajan Mathew emphasized that every institute must promote research and innovation and must also have comprehensive industry collaborations. However, the panel was in favour of internships for teachers. According to the panel, teachers must be sent for internships which enable them with the latest skills needed in the market and equip them to provide better quality education.
