Hindustan Institute of Technology and Science (HITS), a reputed Deemed-to-be-University located in India, Chennai was established in 1985 by late Dr.KCG Verghese. The institution has a student population of over 10,000 students and is internationally acclaimed for its educational and research achievements. For over a decade, Dr. Anand Jacob Verghese, the Chancellor has adeptly headed the operations and guided the expansion of HITS. Under his esteemed leadership, the institution was granted university status and has garnered a renowned global reputation. Four professors from HITS have been recognized in the top 2 per cent of global scientists according to Stanford University. Over 5489 publications, 24,450 citations and 124 patents are all credited to HITS.
HITS is a NAAC A+ accredited Deemed-to-be-university, ranked 33rd among private universities in India in the QS Asia rankings 2023. The QS I Gauge rankings 2024 awarded the institution with a Diamond category under Indian University Rankings. OBE Rankings 2023 (R World Institutional Ranking) –HITS was ranked in the Diamond Band with A+ Grade for Higher Educational Institution of Excellence. The Education World ranked HITS to number 8 in India among top Private Engineering & Technology University Rankings 2024. Around 90 per cent of the students secure placements each year and is ranked 3rd in Best placement among universities in Chennai by Times rankings 2024. Programmes and curriculum
The institute offers over 100 programmes across several academic disciplines including engineering, science, technology, aviation, fashion & design, arts, allied health sciences and humanities. All UG & PG programs are approved by the AICTE and the engineering programs are accredited by the NBA. HITS is one of the few universities in India to be internationally accredited by The Institution of Engineering & Technology (IET), UK, for B.Tech programs. The Institution focuses on Industry 4.0 Ready Programs and Engineering Degrees in specialised fields of study such as Clean Energy, Cyber Security, Avionics and Artificial Intelligence Machine Learning to bridge the gap in the growing requirement of a skilled workforce created by these emerging technology arenas.

Infrastructure at HITS

Advanced laboratories, workshops, and specialised research centres are equipped with cutting-edge tools, instruments, and software to facilitate hands-on learning, skill development, research endeavours, and experimentation. The institution has 16 research centres, aircraft hangars and a multi-storey library with access to digital resources and a collection of 1.2 million books, a moot court for law programs, incubation centres, 15-acre well-maintained playground for sports, cafeterias, residential and transportation facilities for the students. The institution stands as a proud pioneer for aerospace and aviation programs in India and has advanced research centres focused on satellite technology, defence technology studies, photo tonics and Lidar research, Structural Impact Crash Simulation and autonomous systems as well as laboratories on space propulsion, composite fabrication, avionics, aerodynamics, subsonic and supersonic wind tunnel testing, the ALSIM 250 aircraft simulator, rocket engine design and testing, hail ice impact studies, non-destructive testing, and much more.
Centre for Online and Digital Education
HITS is approved by the UGC as a Center for Online and Digital Education (CODE) provides online education to learners worldwide. These classes include recorded sessions and live interaction with instructors from esteemed global institutions. HITS has been certified with QS I – Gauge E Lead for E-learning excellence for academic digitisation.
Incubation centres at HITS
The institution has incubation centres, namely the Hindustan Technology Business Incubator (HTBI) and Hindustan Entrepreneurship and Innovation Centre (HEIC) where students' ingenious ideas are facilitated and considered for product development. These centres cultivate a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship on campus. A total of 100 patents have been granted, 200 patents published and 350 patents have been filed so far which makes the institution a 4 star plus in innovation council all India ranking. HITS has been awarded many Patents and various sanctioned Funded Research Projects from leading organisations in India like Department of Science and Technology (DST), Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO), Naval Research Board (NRB) etc.
