Social media giant Instagram has achieved a significant milestone with its recently launched text-based app, Threads, surpassing 100 million sign-ups within a remarkably short span of just five days.
The application, which was unveiled on 6 June (5 June in the Americas), has swiftly gained traction. On the first day of its release, Threads attracted an impressive 2 million sign-ups in a mere two hours, followed by a staggering five million sign-ups within four hours. The app's popularity continued to surge as it reached 10 million registered users within just seven hours. The following day, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg proudly announced that over 30 million individuals had already signed up to experience the new platform.
Threads has now managed to outpace even OpenAI's ChatGPT bot, which previously held the title of one of the fastest-growing consumer products. ChatGPT accomplished 10 million daily users within 40 days and 100 million monthly users in approximately two months. Threads, in its inaugural month, has exceeded these milestones by crossing the threshold of 100 million monthly active users.
However, while Threads has garnered immense interest, several features currently absent from the platform have drawn attention. Notably, the app lacks support for ActivityPub, the protocol used for decentralized network posts. Meta has acknowledged this limitation and is actively working on integrating ActivityPub. Until this integration is completed, Threads will not be part of the Fediverse.
Additional missing features include a read-only web interface, the absence of post search capabilities, direct messaging functionality, hashtags, and a "Following" feed. Furthermore, due to Instagram's regulations, the app prohibits nudity, a stance that sets it apart from Bluesky, another alternative to Twitter that embraces more liberal content policies.
Nonetheless, achieving the impressive milestone of 100 million users in such a short timeframe is undoubtedly a notable accomplishment for Threads.
