Solo travel is becoming an increasingly popular choice in India, marking a significant shift in the way people explore the world. With more travellers seeking independence, affordability, and meaningful connections, this trend is reshaping the travel landscape. According to an American Express survey, 84 per cent of Indians plan to embark on solo trips in 2024, 18 per cent higher than the global average. Additionally, 58 per cent of Indian travellers express a preference for spontaneous, last-minute trips, underscoring a growing appetite for flexible and budget-conscious travel options.
Affordable Travel and Shared Accommodations
Solo travellers are not just exploring new destinations—they are redefining how they travel. The rise in solo journeys has fueled demand for low-cost accommodations like hostels, homestays, and camping. Pranav Dangi, Founder and CEO of The Hosteller, points out, "Solo travellers are driving the shift toward shared accommodations, which offer affordability while fostering cultural exchange and community connections."
Budget stays provide an authentic cultural experience, allowing travellers to immerse themselves in local communities. Hostels, in particular, have embraced this trend, catering specifically to solo travellers with communal spaces, group activities, and cultural exchanges. "Hostels and shared spaces offer more than just affordability—they create a vibrant communal atmosphere," says Deep Banka, COO of Zostel. "There is a 150 per cent rise in solo and community trips, making travel more social and enriching."
The Role of Technology and Community Platforms
Technology has played a pivotal role in making solo travel more accessible. Online platforms like Meetup, Airbnb Experiences, and travel-specific apps have become essential tools for solo adventurers. These platforms allow individuals to connect with like-minded travellers, join group tours, and participate in local activities, enhancing both safety and enjoyment.
Pranav Dangi highlights the importance of tech-enabled travel options through The Hosteller’s Glu app. "Our app allows for contactless check-ins, in-stay feedback, meal ordering, and transportation services, providing a hassle-free experience for travellers. This meets the growing demand for eco-friendly and tech-enabled travel options."
Community-Based Exploration
The rise of community-based travel groups has transformed solo adventures into shared experiences. By using digital platforms, solo travellers can easily meet others with similar interests, plan group trips, and explore together. This not only makes travel more affordable but also fosters deeper connections among travellers.
Sandeep Arora, Director of Brightsun Travel, explains, "More travellers are opting for longer holidays and affordable stays like hostels and homestays, enriching their experiences and helping them connect with local communities. Community-based platforms make it easier for solo travellers to explore together, offering companionship while maintaining the freedom of solo travel."
Sumit Rana, Founder of Come What May, adds, "Solo travel offers a unique sense of freedom. With the rise of budget-friendly stays, travellers can immerse themselves in local culture and daily life, which is often more authentic than luxury experiences."
Sustainability and the Future of Travel
As sustainability becomes a core focus for the future of tourism, solo travellers are increasingly opting for eco-friendly options. According to Airbnb, more than 90 per cent of Indian travellers now prefer sustainable travel choices. "With 76 per cent of travellers seeking more sustainable options, initiatives like electric transportation and responsible tourism are key to reducing carbon emissions," says Rikant Pittie, Co-Founder of EaseMyTrip. "Sustainability is now central to the future of travel."
On this World Tourism Day, the travel industry celebrates the transformative power of solo exploration. Solo travel is not just a trend; it is a movement that fosters global understanding, enriches lives, and promotes sustainability. As more Indians choose to travel solo, they are redefining the way the world is explored, one journey at a time.
As solo travel continues to grow in popularity, it reflects the evolving priorities of modern travellers—affordability, community, sustainability, and spontaneity. The rise of technology, budget accommodations, and eco-friendly options ensures that this trend will shape the future of global tourism, offering rich, diverse experiences for those who seek to explore the world on their own terms.
