Six Indian Americans have won seats in the US House of Representatives, raising their total representation from five in the previous Congress. Among them, Suhas Subramanyam made history as the first Indian American elected from Virginia and the entire East Coast. Currently a Virginia State Senator, Subramanyam defeated Republican candidate Mike Clancy.
There may soon be seven Indian Americans in the House, as Amish Shah is narrowly leading against the Republican incumbent in Arizona's 1st Congressional District.
Subramanyam, formerly a White House advisor to President Obama, expressed gratitude for the support from Virginia’s 10th District, highlighting his deep personal ties to the area. Joining the "Samosa Caucus" in Congress, he will work alongside re-elected members Ami Bera, Raja Krishnamoorthi, Ro Khanna, Pramila Jayapal and Shri Thanedar.
Shri Thanedar won his second term from Michigan's 13th District, while Krishnamoorthi secured his fifth term from Illinois' 7th District, and Bera, the senior-most Indian American Congressman, won his seventh term from California's 6th District. In Arizona, Democrat Shah leads with 132,712 votes to his opponent's 128,606, with 63 per cent of votes counted.
