As traders across Delhi decide to go on a day long strike on January 23 to register their protest against sealing of various business establishments, the loss in revenue could amount to approximately Rs 1,400 crore. There are about seven lakh traders in the national capital. The strike has been called. The Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) said that the situation would be reviewed after Tuesday.
"We will take a call on the future course of action after tomorrow and at this moment," Praveen Khandelwal, secretary general, CAIT told BW. He said that the strikes could even intensify in the coming weeks in case representatives of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and traders fail to arrive at a consensus on the issue of sealing of business establishments.
CAIT said that the ongoing sealing drive was unilateral illegal and unjustified.
"The situation of the trading community in Delhi in the wake of the sealing drive is s pathetic that they have been reduced to the status of beggars," Khandelwal said in a statement.
For the last few months, the trading community has had a rough time.
Several traders across the country have already been hit after the implementation of the goods and services tax (GST). Prior to the GST implementation, the demonetisation exercise too had an adverse impact on the country's trading community. Sales even during the Diwali-Christmas period remained lower than the usual. Many Delhi traders who were dealing in fire crackers too suffered losses due to the Supreme Court ban on their sale just ahead of Diwali
