The State Bank of India (SBI) has informed customers that its Unified Payment Interface (UPI) services will experience a temporary suspension on 26 November for several hours. This interruption is necessary for technological upgrades to the UPI platform, with a planned downtime of three hours.
SBI, India's largest lender, communicated through its official channels that UPI transactions would be halted between 00:30 to 3:00 IST on 26 November 2023. During this period, other digital channels of SBI, including Internet Banking, YONO, YONO Lite and ATMs, will remain operational.
To accommodate online payments during this temporary UPI service suspension, customers are advised to utilise alternative methods such as internet banking and SBI's online application, YONO.
The impact of this UPI service disruption extends to over 44 crore customers of India's largest public sector bank. SBI is actively working to enhance its UPI services, aiming to address historical challenges related to transaction success rates.
While UPI has become a widely used and rapid online payment method in India, its internationalisation is underway. The Indian government is currently engaged in discussions with Western countries and Japan to introduce UPI services overseas.
Additionally, the Reserve Bank of India has announced plans to link UPI payments with Singapore's Paynow, enhancing the efficiency and transparency of transactions between the two countries in the future.
