The 2016 Summer Olympics came to a spectacular end on 21 August, but Twitter is still abuzz about it. Throughout the #Rio2016 Games, fans around the world turned to Twitter to cheer victories, engage with athletes, see highlights, and share in the live experience. “Rio 2016 saw Indians come together to celebrate our women sporting heroes on Twitter on a scale never seen before. Four out of the top five most mentioned Indian athletes on Twitter during the Olympics were women and there were more than 2 million tweets around the performances of P.V. Sindhu, Sakshi Malik, Dipa Karmakar and Sania Mirza. This was even more than the number of Tweets for the India-Pakistan and India-Australia matches at the 2016 ICC World T20 combined,” says Aneesh Madani, head of Sports Partnerships at Twitter India.
Over 187 million tweets were sent about the Games, which led to 75 billion impressions (views on and off Twitter).
The top five Olympics moments for India based on tweets-per-minute spikes were around P.V. Sindhu winning the first set of her Olympics final, Dipa Karmakar landing the Produnova in her Olympics final, Sakshi Malik winning bronze in the final seconds of her repechage round, Abhinav Bindra making it to a shootoff in the Olympics final and Sania Mirza and Rohan Bopanna winning the first set of their semi-final.
“Twitter became the common channel of communication between our athletes in Rio and fans and supporters in India, and the roar of the excitement was truly experienced on the platform,” adds Madani.
