The government has extended RBI Deputy Governor T Rabi Sankar's term by one year, as per a central bank statement.
"The Central Government has re-appointed Shri T Rabi Sankar as Deputy Governor, Reserve Bank of India, for a period of one year with effect from May 03, 2024, or until further orders, whichever is earlier," the statement read.
Sankar, who assumed office in May 2021 for a three-year term, has been with the RBI since 1990, holding various positions before becoming Deputy Governor.
Previously serving as Executive Director, he oversaw the Department of Payment and Settlement Systems, Information Technology, Fintech, and Risk Monitoring.
Sankar's professional background extends to consulting for the IMF (2005-11) on government bond markets and debt management. He also chairs Indian Financial Technology and Allied Services (IFTAS), serves on the boards of ReBIT and IDRBT, and holds an MPhil in Economics from Jawaharlal Nehru University.
