Rahul Gandhi's plea for a no-objection certificate (NOC) was granted by the Rouse Avenue Court, but only for three years as opposed to the ten years the Congressman had requested. Gandhi will presumably need to ask the court for a NOC in three years, according to this.
Gandhi lost his right to run for office after being found guilty of criminal defamation on March 23 for saying at a 2019 campaign rally that "all thieves have the surname Modi."
"Nirav Modi, Lalit Modi, Narendra Modi," he had said. Why is 'Modi' such a prevalent surname among thieves?
Purnesh Modi, a former minister for Gujarat, filed the lawsuit against him on the grounds that Gandhi had disparaged persons with the same last name.
A Surat magistrate's court accepted his defence and gave him a two-year prison term, a cut-off conviction that immediately disqualifies a lawmaker from the House.
