“Some of the most original and innovative ideas were born out of dire situations. Problems are aplenty and are waiting for innovative solutions from you,” said Dr. Srivari Chandrasekhar, Secretary, Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, addressing the students who have graduated from The ICFAI Foundation for Higher Education at Hyderabad, at the institute’s twelfth convocation. He said that though publications and patents are essential for scientific research, there is an immediate need for original and socially relevant research that can “touch the lives of the common man.”
Dr. Chandrasekhar cited several examples of frugal innovations that have significantly impacted people and society - like sewage pipe homes, voice prosthetics, Jaipur foot, and indigenous low-cost coronary stents developed by Dr. Abdul Kalam and Dr. Soma Raju. He mentioned Dr. Sonam Wangchuk, whose innovations have improved the lives of the people in Ladakh through a solution for the water problem and of the Indian army personnel through innovative solar-powered mobile tents.
Dr. Chandrasekhar said that the presence of more than 100 unicorns shows the highly vibrant entrepreneurial environment in the country and the opportunities that startups have. He told the graduating students that they would be leaders in the ‘Amrit Kaal’ referring to huge demographic dividend that India has. The country is on the right path, and the Prime Minister’s new mantra jai jawan, jai kisan, jai vignan, and jai anusandhan – will take us forward, he reiterated.
