NMDC Limited has bagged the prestigious S&P Global PLATTS Global Metals Award 2018 in corporate social responsibility category held on 17.05.2018 at London Grosvenor Square Marriott Hotel, UK. Shri N. Baijendra Kumar, IAS, Chairman-cum-Managing Director and Shri Sandeep Tula, Director (Personnel), NMDC Limited received the coveted award. The shortlisted 12 nominations were of renowned companies across the world. This is the first time since inception of this awards, an Indian Company bagged an award in this category.
S&P Global Platts is the leading independent provider of information, benchmark prices and analytics for the energy and commodities markets. It has been in existence for over 100 years.
The S&P Global Platts Global Metals Award recognizes top performers – industry leaders and innovators. The Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Award recognizes the organization that best demonstrates leadership, commitment to action and real-world social impact on social responsibility of corporate business entity.
NMDC is the largest iron ore mining company in India. With iron ore production of around 35 million tonnes per annum (MTPA), it has a domestic market share of about 25%
(non-captive category). NMDC also extracts diamonds through its mine in Panna, which is the only mechanized diamond mine in Asia.
CSR is raison detre of NMDC and not just a part of business strategy. Some of the outstanding features of the CSR programmes of NMDC are mentioned below:

NMDC’s CSR Story is as old as the Company itself and has spawned several success stories in its decades long history. Some of the recent success stories, which have had a positive impact on the life and living conditions of the people residing in the vicinity of its Projects are listed hereunder:
Shiksha Sahayog Yojana – Scholarship Scheme
A scholarship scheme to promote education beyond 8thstandard – 18000 students from marginalized sections of the society are covered from 9th class upto degree level, including professional courses every year. The scheme is operated in the backward areas of Bastar Division of Chhattisgarh and aims to uplift the marginalized sections through Education.
Balika Shiksha Yojana – Sponsorship of Girl students for Para-Medical Education
This is a scheme aimed at sponsoring tribal girl students from backward Bastar Division of Chhattisgarh State for Nursing Courses to enable them earn livelihood and provide efficient Nursing help to the needy tribals of one of the most backward and regions of the Country.
Education City – A hub of Educational Institutions
A hub of educational facilities has been established in Dantewada District in partnership with the State Government of Chhattisgarh with institutions ranging from primary level educational facility to professional institutions.
Free medical treatment to Tribals at Project Hospitals
1,00,000 out-patients & 10,000 in-patients are benefitted per annum.
Polytechnic & ITIs
One Polytechnic at Dantewada Dist & Two ITIs at Bhansi (Dantewada Dist) & Nagarnar (Bastar Dist) have been established & operated by NMDC with a view to impart supervisory level & trade level technical education to the local youth of the Bastar Division.
Residential School, Nagarnar
NMDC runs a residential school in Bastar District of Chhattisgarh. Around 600 tribal children hailing from remote hamlets are benefitting. Most of these students are Ist generation school goers.
Support to Mid Day Meal Scheme
Support to Mid day meal scheme to make the meal nutritious and wholesome for school going children.
Apart from the above mentioned initiatives, the Company has undertaken various initiatives under various focus areas viz. Drinking water, skill development, Health & Hygiene etc. to raise the standard of living of the local populace and help them tap opportunities for their socio-economic development.
Hospital
Financial Contribution of Rs.50 crore for Construction of Medical College at Jagdalpur. This is only such facility in the radius of 300 kilometres.
Sports
NMDC is establishing academy for sports like archery, shooting and athletics in Bastar District of Chhattisgarh at an approximate cost of Rs.90 crore.
