Delivering the inaugural address at the International Climate Summit 2021, RIL CMD, Mukesh Ambani said that a new green revolution has already begun in India and it will ensure India’s self-sufficiency in energy production.
“The old Green Revolution made India self-reliant in food production, the new Green Revolution will help make India self sufficient in energy production,” he said.
Recalling the launch of the Green Hydrogen Mission by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his Independence Day speech, Ambani said the launch signifies India’s determination to achieve azadi from dependence on fossil energy and become atma nirbhar in new and renewable energy.
He further expressed his concern on climate change and described it as the “most daunting challenge” which the human civilization faces today. “It is not enough to make our economies carbon neutral, the world needs to achieve absolute reductions in emissions as soon as possible,” he added.
He said the only option to achieve absolute reductions in emissions is through a rapid transition to a new era of green, clean and renewable energy. He highlighted that this transition is imperative for India because at present it spends $160 Billion every year to import fossil fuels and that even though India’s per capita energy consumption and emissions are less than half the global average, it still remains the world’s third largest emitter of greenhouse gases.
On Green Hydrogen, he said that it is the best and cleanest source of energy and “is key to our ever green, sustainable and prosperous future.” At the same time, he also acknowledged some challenges related to Green Hydrogen including high costs of electrolysis but expects reduced costs in the future with the emerging new technologies for hydrogen storage and transportation.
He presented the company’s strategy and roadmap for the new energy business and said that they have started developing the Dhirubhai Ambani Green Energy Giga Complex over 5,000 acres in Jamnagar. The Complex will be among the largest integrated renewable energy manufacturing facilities in the world.
