Akshay Kumar and Vidya Balan starrer Mission Mangal hit the silver screen on Independence Day last week to a bumper opening and going by the numbers at the box office, the movie seems unstoppable at the ticket windows.
With the film doing exceptionally well over the long weekend, Mission Mangal has earned Rs 97.56 crore and is set to hit the 100-crore club soon.
Mission Mangal collected Rs 29.16 crores on its opening day, making it Akshay Kumar's biggest opener so far. Released in around 3000 screens across India, Mission Mangal has managed to strike the right chord with the audience.
Mission Mangal made Rs 17.28 crore on its second day, followed by Rs 23.58 crore on its third day, thus taking its three- day collection to Rs 70.02 crore.
Taking it further ahead, Mission Mangal did exceptionally well on Sunday too. The film earned Rs 27.54 crore, thus taking the opening long weekend collection to Rs 97.56 crore.
Directed by Jagan Shakti, the movie features Sonakshi Sinha, Vidya Balan, Taapsee Pannu, Kriti Kulhari, in prominent roles. The film also stars Sharman Joshi and Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub in pivotal roles as well.
Mission Mangal is a semi-biography based on the true events of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) successfully launching the Mars Orbiter Mission (Mangalyaan), making it the least expensive mission to Mars.
Talking about the film's response at the ticket windows, Akshay Kumar told PTI that many people speculated that the film would make only Rs 60-70 crore, but he was keen to take the risk and bring the story to the audience.
