MeitY Secretary Implores Chip Companies To Look At Developing India-based IPs
Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) Secretary S Krishnan on Wednesday urged chip design companies to contemplate the development of India-based Intellectual Properties (IPs) while developing their semiconductor products and services.
Speaking at the IESA Vision Summit, Secretary Krishnan posed a crucial question to the attending companies, particularly those who have large design operations based out of India, including arm, NXP Semiconductors, Lam Research, Applied Materials, Texas Instruments and more.
He challenged them to assess whether they are providing design services to others worldwide or are driven by the intention to create products with proprietary IPs. "How many of these companies are doing this as a service to many others across the world? And how many of it are doing it with the intent of ultimately having a product?" he said, addressing the companies present at the event.
Further, Krishnan stressed the significance of taking risks by putting "skin in the game" and fostering a vision where products designed in India are introduced to the global market.
Referencing the less risky business model of designing for others, he urged companies to consider the inspiring examples presented at the summit, illustrating the potential success of turning designs into marketable products. The Secretary stressed the need for companies to contribute to building a resilient value chain in the electronics sector, positioning India as a key player in the world's largest manufacturing segment.
As the electronics value chain is predicted to become the single largest manufacturing sector globally, Krishnan highlighted the importance of India as the most populous country, securing its rightful place in this evolving landscape.
He concluded by encouraging companies to continue working on various segments of the value chain, ensuring India's active participation and support for a globally inclusive electronic ecosystem.
