MediaTek exhibited at COMPUTEX 2024, showcasing new chipsets and artificial intelligence (AI) technology designed for Chromebooks, smart TVs and other devices. The company also highlighted its commitment to bringing intelligence to a wide range of products, from smartphones and tablets to vehicles and industrial environments.
A keynote speech by MediaTek Vice Chairman and CEO Rick Tsai explored how AI will continue to transform various sectors. Tsai emphasised MediaTek's expanding leadership in AI, automotive, Internet of Things (IoT), televisions, Chromebooks and wireless connectivity.
Additionally, two new chipsets were on display: the Kompanio 838 for premium Chromebooks and the Pentonic 800 for 4K smart TVs and displays.
The Kompanio 838 is an octa-core chipset designed for thin and light Chromebooks. It features an integrated MediaTek NPU 650 processor for AI applications, improved image processing with the MediaTek Imagiq 7 series ISP, and hardware-accelerated AV1 video decoding for smooth 4K streaming. In addition, it supports dual-band and tri-band Wi-Fi 6 and 6E connectivity for speeds up to 1.9Gbps.
“The finely tuned balance of power and efficiency the Kompanio 838 brings to Chromebook is a key point of innovation in our portfolio as we seek to bring powerful, affordable and accessible computing to more users around the globe,” said John Solomon, VP and GM, ChromeOS and Google for Education.
“The need for energy-efficient devices capable of multitasking continues to grow and we are committed to empowering students and teachers with tech devices and solutions that enhance learning in the classroom and beyond,” said Benny Zhang, Executive Director and General Manager, Chromebooks in Lenovo’s Global Innovation Center, Intelligent Devices Group.
The Pentonic 800 is designed for 4K smart TVs and displays. It boasts a MediaTek AI processor that offers 50 per cent faster AI processing and reduces bandwidth usage by up to 60 per cent compared to the previous generation. This chipset supports various AI-powered display technologies for upscaling, enhancing picture quality and eliminating noise. Additionally, it supports variable refresh rate (VRR) up to 4K2K 165Hz for smoother gaming experiences.
Further, MediaTek also showcased its Filogic Wi-Fi connectivity solutions, designed to provide reliable high-speed connectivity with low latency for various devices.
