Law Commission Asks Views From Public, Religious Bodies On Uniform Civil Code

The Law Commission of India has requested recommendations for the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) from public and religious bodies.

According to a statement released by the Ministry of Law and Justice, the 21st law commission reviewed the subject of UCC and solicited the views of all stakeholders through its appeal along with a questionnaire on 10 July 2016 and further public notices on 19 March, 27 March and 10 April in 2018.

Taking note of the “overwhelming responses,” the 22nd Law Commission has decided to gather public and recognised religious organisations’ comments and ideas about the UCC once more.

As per the release, “Those who are interested and willing may present their views within a period of 30 days from the date of Notice by email at membersecretary-lci[at]gov[dot]in to the Law Commission of India.

There is no decision on UCC as of now. In February of this year, then-law minister Kiren Rijiju told the Rajya Sabha that the government had not yet decided whether to implement the Uniform Civil Code in the country.

In response to a question on whether the government intends to adopt the UCC bill, Rijiju stated that the topic could be taken up by the 22nd Law Commission for consideration. He also stated that the government had asked the 21st Law Commission of India to investigate several issues concerning UCC and give recommendations.
