The southern actor has time and again expressed his appreciation of the Dravidian ideology.
Kamal Haasan is going to initiate his political career on February 21. With confidence in his endeavour, Haasan is assured of his success with his Dravidian politics. “You will know when I make it a success,” he told journalists when asked about the presence of Dravidian parties in Tamil Nadu and how he could succeed with the same ideology. Earlier in January, he appealed for unity among Southern states under the “Dravidian” identities. “It (Dravidian) is our identity, and it will give the southern states a leverage with the Centre,” the actor had said.
The Chief Ministers of all southern states –Kerala, Karnataka, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh– were all ‘Dravidians,’ and there was no need to stake the claim that only Tamilian was ‘Dravidian'. When the Dravidian identity is “celebrated” across South India, it would lead to a united “chorus” that would reach New Delhi, he had said.
Ahead of the launch of his party, Haasan met DMDK chief Vijayakanth. He said he visited Vijayakanth since he was senior to him in politics. “He greeted me and expressed his happiness for coming to politics,” he said. Kamal had also visited DMK President M Karunanidhi and actor Rajinikanth. “I have been meeting people whom I like before I start this journey,” Kamal Haasan said.
Mr. Haasan, also while speaking at Harvard University said he hoped that Rajinikanth’s political ambitions and ideology would not be inclined towards ‘Saffron politics’. “I hope his hue is not saffron,” he had said. However, it is ambiguous that both actors would join hands or not.
On Tuesday, Haasan said, “I am entering politics only because the ruling AIADMK party is bad, that is why I am not meeting any of them." With his political attempt, the actor said that he intends to "question mediocrity and raise the bar on governance and welfare for the people of Tamil Nadu."
He will kick off his statewide tour on Wednesday, 21st with the launch of his political party and its "guiding principles” in Madurai, Tamil Nadu. In the first phase of his tour, Haasan will visit his hometown, Ramanathapuram, as well as Madurai, Dindigul and Sivagangai districts.
While Bihar CM Nitish Kumar has not confirmed his participation in the inauguration, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal is likely to attend Haasan’s Madurai rally.
The actor had in September last year returned the donations which he had received from his fans for his soon-to-be-launched political party.
Earlier, he was landed in a controversy for making a contentious statement regarding 'Hindu terrorism'. The actor later apologised for his remarks and said that he was misquoted.
