As Covid-19 pandemic hits the world in 2020, the Indian pharma industry rose to the occasion and was able to manufacture and maintain supply chains even in the lockdown period.
They exported medicines such as HCQ and paracetamol to more than 150 countries, maintaining the image of the reliable Pharmacy of the World. As the vaccine rollout has begun in some countries the world ravaged by the pandemic is looking to India for the large scale production and supply of the Corona Virus Vaccine. The world at present is looking at India with hope to manufacture and supply the huge quantity of vaccines needed to tackle the Covid-19 pandemic.
According to the statistics, India contributes 60% of the world’s vaccine production, hence, it is clear that India will be playing a vital role in the equitable distribution of vaccines around the world, Sudarshan Jain the Secretary-General of the Indian Pharmaceutical Alliance (IPA) told.
While companies like the Bharat Biotech, Zydus and Genova are working to produce indigenous vaccines, other domestic companies are collaborating with global companies such as the Serum Institute with AstraZeneca, J&J with Biological E, and Dr Reddy’s with Sputnik.
India will become the benchmark in vaccine distribution and will ensure targeted and phased distribution with the help of technology. Jain also said that India has always believed in that global cooperation and coordination is fundamental to meet the present Covid-19 situation, according to a media report.
Presently, three Covid-19 vaccine candidates of Bharat Biotech, Serum Institute of India and Pfizer are under active consideration of India’s active drug regulator and there is hope that early licensure is possible for all or any of them according to the union health ministry.
