India Signs Agreement To Export Green Ammonia to Japan, Strengthening Global Green Energy Ties

In a major boost to India’s green energy sector, Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi chaired the signing of the country’s first-ever agreement to export Green Ammonia to Japan. This milestone marks a significant step in India’s ambition to become a global leader in the production of green hydrogen and ammonia.

The Heads of Terms (HoT) agreement was signed between Sembcorp Industries, Sojitz Corporation, Kyushu Electric Power, and NYK Line, establishing a pioneering cross-border partnership for the supply of green ammonia from India to Japan. This collaboration, the first of its kind between the two nations, underscores India’s expanding role in the global green energy landscape.

Under the agreement, Sembcorp Industries will spearhead the production of green ammonia in India, utilizing renewable energy sources. Kyushu Electric Power. will integrate this green ammonia into their energy mix, partially replacing coal consumption at thermal power plants in Japan. Sojitz Corporation will serve as the intermediary, linking the producer and the off-taker, while NYK Line will manage the maritime transport of the green ammonia from India to Japan.

Minister Pralhad Joshi also announced that a tender for 750,000 TPA (tonnes per annum) of Green Ammonia is currently open, with additional tenders for 450,000 TPA capacity also floated. These initiatives are part of India’s broader strategy to incentivise the production of over a million tonnes per annum of Green Hydrogen, showcasing the country’s capacity and intent to rapidly scale up green energy production.

Pralhad Joshi further emphasised the deep cultural and economic ties between India, Japan, and Singapore, noting ongoing collaborations in energy efficiency and renewable technologies. He expressed optimism that this agreement is just the beginning, with future projects expected to be even more ambitious and impactful.

This agreement not only solidifies India’s position as a key player in the global green energy market but also reflects the Government of India’s strong commitment to advancing green hydrogen and renewable energy initiatives.
