“May I join you,” he asked. I was making my way to the first tee box at the TNGF golf course in Chennai. This was sometime during my stint in Chennai during 2009-‘10.
“Sure,” I said.
We shook hands. “I am Vaghul,” he said.
I had no knowledge of who he was.
On the course, players from other fairways would walk over and wish him and move away.
In between golf shots I politely enquired as to what he did.
“I am sort of retired,” he said.
As we shook hands and parted after the game, one of my golfing buddies walked up to me, and pointing to the person walking away from us, asked me, “How do you know him?”
“ We just met on the course,” I said.
“ He is the ex-Chairman of ICICI bank,” he said.
A quote came to my mind - The path to true greatness begins with humility.
I had just walked over nine holes with true greatness.
Thank you destiny and thank you Mr. Vaghul.
RIP Sir.
