Riding on the success of its new range of scooters - the Maestro Edge and Duet - India's largest two-wheeler manufacturer Hero MotoCorp has acquired the second spot in the fiercely competitive scooter segment.
Hero has dethroned another domestic manufacturer, TVS Motor Company, and is only behind its former partner Honda.
As per the recently released data, Hero sold 42,851 units of the Maestro Edge, followed by 31,456 units of the Duet scooter. Its old offering Hero Pleasure recorded sales of 13,849 units. The company sold total 88,156 units in February.
Meanwhile, TVS sold 47,712 units of the Jupiter, the company's best-selling scooter and the second best-selling scooter in the country. However, other TVS products could not achieve similar success, with its Wego model selling 5,268 units, the Scooty Zest achieving 5,878 units and the Scooty Pep+ selling 5,957 units.
There has been a slight change in the market share of the manufacturer after the February numbers.
Honda registered sales of 2,544,872 units in the first 11 months of the fiscal year 2015-2016, acquiring a 56 per cent market share in the automatic scooter segment.
Hero Motocorp and TVS Motors have a market share of 16 per cent and 15.5 per cent respectively. Yamaha finishes at number four with a market share of 6.3 per cent while Suzuki claims 4.5 per cent of the Indian scooter market.
Things may intensify in the segment as Hero’s next target will be to increase its market share to compete with the market leader Honda. TVS, which has been concentrating on its motorcycle range of late, is sure to bounce back in the scooter space with more exciting products.
