According to data from job portal Indeed, job postings in the US related to generative AI experienced a significant 20 per cent increase last month. This surge reflects companies' growing interest in leveraging this technology, which has been widely hailed as a major driver of future growth.
The figure for May, standing at 204 per million job postings, not only exceeded last year's levels but also more than doubled, highlighting the buzz surrounding AI.
The remarkable success of OpenAI's ChatGPT has played a crucial role in generating enthusiasm for this field. Roles such as data scientist, software engineer, machine learning engineer, and data engineer were in high demand, collectively making up a significant portion of the AI job postings on Indeed's US platform.
Nick Bunker, the director of economic research at Indeed, observed a noteworthy increase in job seeker interest specifically in AI-related positions, especially since the introduction of ChatGPT. This surge arrives at a time when the broader tech job market faces challenges due to mass layoffs at prominent companies like Meta Platforms and Amazon.com, both of which are tightening their belts in response to an uncertain economy.
Indeed's report revealed an overall decline of 43.6 per cent in tech jobs across the United States since June of the previous year. Furthermore, the number of available AI jobs fails to keep pace with the level of interest from job seekers.
In May, searches for generative AI jobs surged to 147 per million total job searches, marking a substantial increase compared to virtually zero searches recorded the previous year.
Companies such as Meta Platforms, Apple, TikTok, Pinterest, and Amazon.com are among those posting generative AI job listings on Indeed's US website. These industry giants are actively seeking professionals with expertise in generative AI to spearhead their initiatives in this promising field.
