ESDS Solution Software, one of India’s leading managed data center service and auto-scalable cloud solution providers, was founded in 2005 by Piyush Somani. A well-known fact that a happy employee can help the organisation achieve results beyond the targets assigned. An employee satisfaction is the biggest marker of its success. A survey ranked ESDS Solution Software No. 2 among the top 50 Great Mid-Size Workplaces in the country for 2019.
Businessworld caught up with Piyush Somani, MD & CEO, ESDS Solution Software, to understand what makes the organisation a ‘Great Place to Work’.
Started in 2005, the company was built on the principles of equality and respect for everyone regardless of his/her position in the organisation. “I have had my share of bad experiences with unequal discriminatory treatment at workplaces, where I had worked before. Even my father and father-in-law have experienced similar discrimination at the work and it was their idea that I should create something of my own. They motivated and supported me in creating an organisation, where each employee was treated with respect and equality. Also a place where they are provided with equal opportunities to succeed in their professional lives. That is how ESDS came into with a goal to create an actual great place to work.”
As per Somani, an ideal company is where people do not have to worry about their salaries or designations. The only thing they focus on is innovation and how to make their customers happier. Also, they don’t have to worry about KPIs or KRAs because everything is systematic and automated, which based on the output they generate for the company they keep on getting returns. The company has around 50 employees, who are with the company for more than 10 years, and around 300 individuals, who are associated for more than five years.
A part of the IT industries demand adherence to strict the deadlines while delivering the solutions, but ESDS makes a priority to reduce stress for its employees. The company has flexible work schedule and streamlines the work methods for maximum efficiency without increasing the stress on its employees. When needed, its employees have worked on tight deadlines staying as much as 72 hours on the job.
The company wants to be known as an organisation that works on innovations and next-generation technologies because it believes a great place to work is futuristic. The company’s focus is on being future ready. Transparency, integrity, professionalism, commitment to values form the essential character and guiding principles for all decisions, transactions and policy matters are some of the few things that the company believes in. The goal is to not only achieve business excellence but also work towards the overall betterment of all stakeholders and the society at large.
Somani believes that they have been successful in achieving this goal of an ideal company up to 30-35 per cent. It follows the mantra of ‘treat everyone the way you want to be treated’ right from the office assistants to gardeners to the top senior level managers. According to Somani, the pragmatic application of this philosophy is to ensure constant respect for each other, care for each other’s wellbeing and support for mutual success in the form of providing instructions, knowledge, and resources necessary to get the job done to the best of everyone’s ability.
A number of employees, who were recruited at ESDS as office assistants, gardeners and even some hardware engineers, are now leading the teams of their own. These people have risen up to lead technical teams consisting of 30-40 people under them. This is a great example of equal opportunities for all and a truly great place to work.
