Tech mogul Elon Musk has put up a collection of iconic Twitter memorabilia and office assets for auction, just weeks after the social media giant's rebranding as 'X'. The auction, titled "Twitter Rebranding: Online Auction Featuring Memorabilia, Art, Office Assets & More," is set to feature 584 lots that provide a unique opportunity for enthusiasts to own a piece of the platform's history.
Among the items up for grabs are coffee tables, oversized bird cages, and even oil paintings that captured viral moments on the platform. These oil paintings are expected to be among the most sought-after items, with one depicting the star-studded selfie of TV host Ellen DeGeneres at the 2014 Academy Awards. The second painting dates back to November 2012 and captures the image shared by former US President Barack Obama, which at the time became Twitter's most-liked tweet.
Musical enthusiasts will find themselves drawn to the assortment of musical instruments on offer, including guitars, drum kits, amplifiers, and a fully-equipped DJ booth complete with controllers, mixers, and speakers. This impressive collection is touted to be sufficient for outfitting an entire band, promising a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for aspiring musicians and collectors alike.
Perhaps the centerpiece of the auction, however, is the Twitter sign that still graces the firm's headquarters on 10th Street in San Francisco. Prospective buyers are advised that the bird-adorned sign is still mounted on the building and that the successful bidder will be responsible for engaging a licensed company with the necessary permits to facilitate its removal.
Interested bidders can participate in the auction, slated to take place over two days from September 12th to 14th. The starting offer for each lot is set at a modest USD 25 (GBP 19.70), ensuring that a wide range of enthusiasts can join in the bidding frenzy.
Last month, the company's attempt to remove the iconic sign was temporarily thwarted by local authorities, highlighting the significance of this unique auction. With the rebranding efforts well underway, the auction provides a final opportunity for fans to acquire tangible relics from Twitter's past and usher in the dawn of the 'X' era.
