India imports nearly 22 lakh crore of fossil fuel and if we will be able to divert even five to six lakh crore through this transition the contribution of agriculture to India’s GDP will go more than 20 per cent, said Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari.
While speaking at Deloitte India’s Government Summit, Gadkari said that in the agriculture sector, our MSP is higher side and the market price is on the lower side. The MSP for corn is Rs 1,800 per quintal, and the market price was Rs 1,200 but when we decided to use corn for ethanol, the price of the corn reached to Rs 2800 per quintal. This jump is going to be beneficial for the farmer and helpful for the rural agriculture economy.
On the importance of Hydrogen as a fuel, the minister said, “A lot of experiments are going on for making hydrogen from water by electrolyser process. India is the number one manufacturer in the world for electrolysers, but the one kg of hydrogen by electrolyser process is 50 units for one kg.” He added that the best source of making hydrogen is by segregating municipal waste.
“We can take the organic waste powder, then, by using biotechnology, increase the productivity of biomass and taking it to biodigester, we will get methane and then we will get the hydrogen,” the minister said.
Gadkari mentioned that as Transport Minister, he set a goal for India to produce hydrogen at USD 1 per kilogram. “And it’s going to happen,” he added.
