Covaxin Gets Emergency Use Authorisation For Children Aged 6-12: Sources
The Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) has given restricted emergency use authorisation to Bharat Biotech's Covaxin for children between the age of 6-12 years, sources said on Tuesday.
The development comes after the Subject Expert Committee (SEC) of the DCGI asked Bharat Biotech for additional data on Covaxin, for administering it to children aged between 2-12 years, sources said.
Covaxin, one of the main vaccines administered to adults, is currently being administered to children in the age group of 15-18 years.
As schools reopen across the country, the focus has shifted to vaccines for children. In recent days there has been a fresh surge in Covid-19 cases, especially among children.
On Thursday, the SEC also recommended the use of Biological E's Corbevax among children aged 5-12 years. Corbevax is currently being administered to children in the age group 12-14 years.
The vaccination drive for children in the age group of 15-18 years commenced on January 3 this year. The drive later expanded on March 16 to include children aged between 12-14 years. They are being administered Corbevax.
