Coffee Production Expected to Increase in India and Worldwide

India is among few Asian nations along with Vietnam and Nepal that makes 33 per cent of global coffee production / supplies. While coffee is believed to be world's most favourite beverage with some 2.5 billion cups consumed every day. The same is produced in 70 plus nations mostly in developing countries like Brazil, India and Vietnam etc. While India is believed to be the sixth largest coffee producer of the world. India till last Production year had accounted for five per cent of global coffee production.

India's coffee production may witness a slight upsurge this year.  India’s estimated production is forecast to gain 400,000 bags to 5.3 million bags (US standard packages) as favorable weather during the flowering and fruit set period is expected to improve Arabica and Robusta yields. It is a good news for coffee planters besides marketing both domestic and international may become challenging. Bean exports are forecast to get down by 300,000 bags to 3.3 million, while inventories are expected to rise slightly. 

Coffee production in India is dominated in the hill tracts of South Indian states, with Karnataka accounting for 71%, followed by Kerala with 21% and Tamil Nadu (5% of overall production with 8,200 tonnes). ... There are about 250,000 coffee growers in the country; 98% of them are small growers.

In 2019, coffee exports from India rose marginally to 3.50 lakh tonne as compared to 3.48 lakh tonne in the previous year, according to the Coffee Board.

Brazil that is facing upsurge in production estimate as well as Covid-19 cases might remain uncertain. Though, international agencies like GAIN are positive about exports from Brazil. International Coffee Organization (ICO) is positive of higher exports globally resulting from Brazilian yields. Arabica output from Brazil is forecast to gain 6.8 million bags above the previous season to 47.8 million. Good weather conditions prevailed in most coffee regions, supporting fruit setting and development and filling, thus resulting in high yields.
