In the last five years or so, powerful and elegant superbikes have emerged as a new favourite of the rich in the country. The growing demand for luxury bikes coupled with easy availability in the market is making the segment more popular than ever. Triumph Motorcycles India managing director Vimal Sumbly says, “Aspirations are high, and motives to achieve them are higher. This has fueled the financial institutions to provide means to those who aspire. Owning a piece of their aspirations gives them instant gratification. Flashing labels has become an addiction.” Triumph Motorcycles is expecting to clock 20-25 per cent sales growth in the country in 2017, over the 3,000 units it sold in the past 30 months.
Pankaj Dubey, managing director of Polaris India which sells luxury bikes by American brand Indian Motorcycle, says the passion for biking is on the rise in India. “Successful people in India always fantasised about owning a bike and going for an adventurous ride. Now, they are doing it.” The company aims to clock 50 per cent growth in sales this year and corner 15 per cent market share in the 1,200cc-plus segment, apart from doubling the sales network.
Superbike enthusiasts in India are continually engaging in numerous joy rides, sometimes in gangs and sometimes alone. Companies are also spending time and money to encourage this growing culture. They organise rallies and other events for charity under some of their renowned clubs. In fact, getting membership in exclusive clubs like Riders Association of Triumph (RAT), Indian Motorcycle Riders Group (IMGR), Harley Owners Group (HOG) is a matter of pride.
