Bhutan has recently abolished its compulsory travel insurance policy, aiming to streamline the travel process for tourists. Previously, visitors were obligated to secure travel insurance covering various eventualities, such as medical emergencies and accidents, in accordance with Bhutan's Tourism Rules and Regulations of 2022. However, the Department of Tourism Bhutan announced the revocation of this requirement, effective immediately, in a statement dated 23 April 2024.
Initially introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic to safeguard tourists against unforeseen emergencies, particularly medical expenses related to the virus, the mandatory travel insurance policy has now been lifted. Bhutan's decision reflects a commitment to promoting seamless travel and facilitating smoother visa processing for visitors.
Although travel insurance is no longer mandatory for visa processing, Bhutan recommends tourists to consider obtaining it as a precautionary measure, particularly for international trips and potential medical emergencies. Previously, proof of travel insurance coverage in English was obligatory for visa applications. However, tourists now have the option to forego travel insurance when travelling to Bhutan.
