The Bar Association of India has felicitated legal legends who also makeup its Board of Advisors.
They were honoured at the inauguration ceremony of "The Lawyers of India Day" on December 3. The occasion coincided with the birth anniversary of India's first president Dr Rajendra Prasad, who was a lawyer by training.
Prof N.R. Madhava Menon, father of modern legal education in India, founder vice chancellor of National Law School of India University, Bangalore, and National University of Juridical Sciences, Kolkata, was the guest of honour.
Speaking on the occasion, Menon said it was an excellent initiative on part of the Bar Association of India to highlight the role of legal profession not only in the past but also with view of the future.
It is appropriate that Lawyers of India Day is celebrated throughout the country in the memory of Prasad, he said.
Lalit Bhasin, president of the Bar Association of India, said the senior members of the legal community have high public standing and extremely valuable experience.
"These stalwarts have always worked towards the development and growth of the legal community in India. The legal community owes much to them," he said.
The Bar Association has been actively involved in providing free legal aid, improvement of legal education, and maintenance of high professional conduct and discipline, he added.
The association has always stood in the forefront to defend the rule of law and the independence of the judiciary, and has rendered yeomen's service to uplift the standards of the legal profession and education in India, the top lawyers noted.
Acknowledging its contributions, Anil B. Divan, one of the advisors, stated, "The legal community in India has played a very significant role in shaping some major reforms that have taken place in the country today. The Association has been very active in taking forward several regional and bilateral initiatives which have been vital to take forward the trade and economic objectives of the country."
