It is forecasted that marketing year (MY) 2018-19 (from Oct-Sep) coffee production will remain at 5.5 million 60-kg bags (330,000 metric tons) as per revised estimates by the United States Foreign Agriculture Service. The 2018-19 crop forecast is 100,000 60-kg bags which is certainly lower than the official United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) 2017-18 crop estimate. Due to unusually high temperatures and inadequate rains during the Northeast Monsoon that delayed Arabica plant development, rising temperatures damaged coffee plants and led to stunted growth and moisture stress which is must for coffee plant development. Trade sources indicated a high incidence of white stem borer infestations (a pest that can lead up to 40 per cent of yield loss in Arabica coffee) on the MY 2017-18 Arabica crop. The coffee growers have been advised by state governments to uproot and burn infested plants.
Robusta is the more well-known variety and records for more than 70 per cent of India's espresso trim.
