In move to expand its international network, state-run Air India Ltd on Wednesday (06 April) launched non-stop flight services to Vienna from New Delhi. This is the national flag carrier’s eighth European destination.
The Vienna non-stop service will operate three times a week on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday with a Boeing B787 Dreamliner aircraft.
Speaking on the occasion, Ashwani Lohani, chairman and managing director of Air India said: "The new service assumed significance in view of the strong relationship that India and Austria have been sharing in tourism, education, industry, culture and so on. The new service will cater to different segments of air travellers."
The flight will offer easy connection to over 25 destinations in Europe.
Situated on the banks of river Danube, Vienna is renowned for its imperial palaces, forts, museums and operas. The most important business sectors are trade, scientific and technological services, real estate, manufacturing and tourism. Over 6.5 million tourists from India visited Vienna in 2015.
Meanwhile, Civil Aviation Secretary RN Choubey said that the government has no such plans to privatise the national carrier as the airline has improved its financial performance.
Choubey rebutted a recent news report that said the government planed to divest its stake in Air India .
The civil aviation secretary added the national carrier has improved its financial performance in recent times. It has made operating profits since December 2015.
