After Japan, Afghanistan’s Fayzabad experienced seismic activity on 3 January, with two earthquakes reported by the National Centre for Seismology (NCS). The first quake, with a magnitude of 4.4 and occurring at 12:28 a.m. IST, was situated 126 km east of Fayzabad at a depth of 80 km.
Following that, a second earthquake hit at 12:55 a.m. IST, located 100 km east-southeast of Fayzabad, registering a magnitude of 4.8 with a depth of 140 km.
The NCS provided details, stating, "Earthquake of Magnitude: 4.8, Occurred on 03-01-2024, 00:55:55 IST, Lat: 36.90 & Long: 71.65, Depth: 140 Km, Location: 100km ESE of Fayzabad, Afghanistan," ANI reported.
Despite the seismic activity, there have been no reports of damage to property in Afghanistan.
Ealier, on Monday, a powerful earthquake of magnitude 7.5 rocked central Japan, leading to a tsunami warning for the country's western coast.
The intensity was measured at 7 on the Japanese scale -- which ranges from zero to seven -- on the Noto Peninsula, Ishikawa Prefecture.
The earthquake occurred at 4:10 pm (local time) 42 km northeast of Anamizu, Japan. The depth was reported at 10 km, according to the USGS. It also shook buildings in central Tokyo.
