India's culinary world is a melting pot of diverse flavors and dishes that represent its vibrant culture. In recent times, these mouth-watering delicacies have become increasingly popular on a global scale with the rise of Asian cuisines. As our lives get busier, we all crave the taste of traditional recipes that take us back in time, but who has the time to prepare them from scratch? This is where the popularity of frozen foods and ready-to-eat items comes in. However, delivering authentic flavors to a global audience while catering to diverse tastes and unique palettes remains a challenge that few companies have been able to solve.
ADF Foods, a leading food manufacturer and distributor, is one of the few companies that have successfully navigated these waters. It has been offering authentic Indian tastes through its wide range of products, including ready-to-eat meals, cooking sauces, pastes, chutneys, spices, and frozen foods. With eight brands and a presence in over 55 countries, it has emerged as one of the preferred choices for ethnic food across the globe.
According to Bimal Thakkar, Chairman and Managing Director of ADF Foods Ltd, the key lies in innovation, “As the food industry continues to evolve, we are excited to step up and meet new expectations. We are confident that our products will meet the evolving demands of our valued consumers and help us expand our market presence. Following the
successful launch of our ADF Soul brand on e-commerce platforms across India, we are pleased to report encouraging initial traction. This has motivated us to expand our product portfolio with a range of new international gourmet products, such as dips, Italian sauces, Thai curry pastes and more. We have also introduced new products under our existing brands, Ashoka and Khansaama, in categories of ready-to-eat and ready-to-cook, including plant-based meats, to cater to the evolving demands of our consumers. We have a dedicated research team of expert chefs and food scientists, which allows us to create innovatively and as we continue to focus on providing superior quality products to our customers, we are confident that our focus on innovation and product excellence will enable us to sustain our success in the future."
As consumers increasingly seek out convenient meal options to fit their fast-paced lifestyles, the global frozen food market is poised for significant growth in the coming years. As a key player in this sector, ADF Foods has been strategically expanding its capacities, introducing new product categories, and variants to meet this rising demand for frozen and ready-to-eat foods. To reach a broader audience in its core markets, the company is also enhancing its distribution network by adding new stores and penetrating mainstream and modern trade chains. Overall, ADF Foods' efforts reflect the industry's trend towards convenient and accessible meal options.
“We have over 400 SKUs, most of them dedicated to our Ashoka brand, which remains one of the top Indian food brands in ethnic stores across the US, UK, and Asia Pacific. Under Ashoka, we manufacture all of our products in India using traditional recipes. Our products are trusted and preferred by Indian diaspora, as they provide a taste of home. The Ashoka brand continues to be successful due to its dedication to traditional recipes and its commitment to using only the highest quality ingredients sourced from India. To meet the growing demand for our products, we have completed our debottlenecking efforts at our existing plants in Nadiad and Nashik to unlock additional capacity and serve the influx of orders. Going forward, our planned greenfield expansion in Surat, which is expected to be completed in 15-18 months, will be able to further increase our frozen food production capacity and unlock the next level of growth,” Mr. Thakkar remarks.
Another critical theme for the food industry has been sustainability. With the rising demand for affordable and environmentally responsible food, coupled with increasing consumer awareness of the impact of their food choices on the planet, food companies have been adopting more sustainable practices throughout their supply chains to remain competitive and meet the changing needs of consumers.
Commenting on how ADF Foods has been mindful of sustainable practices in their operations Mr. Thakkar said, “At our company, we view ensuring the safety and sustainability of our operations as both a moral imperative and a key driver of our business success. To that end, we have implemented a range of sustainable manufacturing processes, such as utilizing renewable energy installations, using eco-friendly packaging materials, and responsibly sourcing our ingredients. In our Nashik Plant, we have heavily invested in solar energy, which allows us to meet almost 90% of our electricity requirements through clean energy. As we continue to expand our operations, our commitment to delivering top-quality products to our customers remains unwavering, while adhering to global standards of quality, sustainability and safety. Our facilities have cleared stringent production norms for export excellence, including certifications such as ISO and USDA.”
Over the years ADF Foods has transformed itself from being a humble retail outlet for specialty dry fruits in 1932 to becoming one of the world’s largest processed food companies. Following a holistic strategy, the company is not only engaged in the processed food business but also in the distribution business and is an exclusive agent for certain marquee tea and coffee brands like Brooke Bond, Taj Mahal and Lipton among others. In December 2021 the company’s wholly owned arm ADF Foods UK Ltd. bagged a contract to exclusively distribute Patanjali Ayurved Ltd.’s products in Western Europe and U.K.
Talking about what lies ahead for the company Thakkar said, “We are thrilled about the opportunities that lie ahead. Our company has always been at the forefront of aggressive branding and advertising campaigns, which have played a crucial role in expanding our product portfolio and increasing brand recognition and customer base. Now, we have even more reason to be optimistic as the Ministry of Food Processing Industries has granted us approval for Production Linked Incentives to promote branding and marketing in the global market. This development is in line with our strategy of exploring new markets and growing our presence within existing markets.”
As ADF Foods continues to expand its market presence with innovative and high-quality products, it also remains committed to sustainable practices and adhering to global standards of quality, sustainability, and safety. Its success in navigating the challenges of delivering authentic flavors to a global audience while catering to diverse tastes and unique palettes has enabled it to emerge as one of the preferred choices for ethnic food across the globe. With its dedication to traditional recipes, commitment to using only the highest quality ingredients, and focus on innovation and product excellence, it is well-positioned to sustain its success and continue to meet the evolving demands of modern consumers.
