75% Indians Were Exposed To Deepfake In Past Year: Report

A recent study revealed a large majority of internet users in India, surpassing 75 per cent, who encountered diverse forms of deepfake content in the past year.

The survey by McAfee found that at least 38 per cent of the respondents encountered a deep fake scam during this period.

During the 12-month survey, it was discovered that 25 per cent of Indians came across deceptive political deepfake material, which was later confirmed to be untrue.

Additionally, the survey shed light on a rise in instances of deep fake frauds, involving the impersonation of well-known individuals across different domains such as business, politics, entertainment and sports.

It added the problem is exacerbated in India, where numerous individuals share deepfake content on social media platforms such as WhatsApp and Telegram without confirming its source, leading to a ripple effect.

The subject of deepfakes gained significant attention in India after a short video featuring actor Rashmika Mandanna went viral last year. Recently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the potential risks associated with the misuse of this technology.
